Damage as a Material Phase Transition

چکیده
Abstract We propose paradigmatic examples to show how material damage phenomena can be efficiently described as a solid-solid phase transition. Starting from the pioneering work of J.L. Ericksen (J. Elast. 5(3):191–201, 1975) and extensions R.L. Fosdick other authors three-dimensional non linear elasticity, we describe insurgence hard → soft transition between two states (damage undamaged) characterized by different energy wells. consider separate constitutive assumptions simple Neo-Hookean type damageable more complex microstructure inspired Gent with variable limit threshold first invariant. In both cases study deformation shear classes, one homogeneous inhomogeneous obtain fully analytic description system response under cyclic loading. The considered classes are aimed at attaining descriptions. On hand, remark that proposed, Griffith type, variational approach damage, based on density functions for damaged undamaged phases, resulting (rank-one) convex energy, extended systems functions, possibly larger number wells representing an increasing degree damage.

Speciation as a Phase Transition
In the most recent theory of cellular evolution, the mechanisms of incorporating foreign pieces in an organisms DNA sequence play an extremely important role. The emergence of species has to be perceived as a phase transition. Exact simulations on theoretical models justify that notion and strengthen the argument of the evolution being communal. Extended versions of those models will probably r...
متن کاملSelf-Organized Criticality as a Phase Transition
The original sandpile model of Bak, Tang and Wiesenfeld from 1987 has inspired lots of consequent work and further ideas of how to describe the birth of scale-invariant statistics in various systems and in particular models. In this article the basic ingredients of self-organized criticality (SOC) are overviewed. In line with the orginal arguments of BTW SOC is now known to be a property of sys...
متن کاملMelting as a String-Mediated Phase Transition
We present a theory of the melting of elemental solids as a dislocation-mediated phase transition. We model dislocations near melt as non-interacting closed strings on a lattice. In this framework we derive simple expressions for the melting temperature and latent heat of fusion that depend on the dislocation density at melt. We use experimental data for more than half the elements in the Perio...
متن کاملLaminations as systolic phase transition
We study a phase transition associated with the property of systolic freedom for families of metrics on 3-manifolds. Given a sequence of minimizing nonseparating surfaces in a systolically free sequence of metrics, we describe a certain accumulation phenomenon. The latter can be captured in the limit by a dichotomy property for the limiting minimal lamination. Such a dichotomy can thus be seen ...
متن کاملMicroencapsulation of Butyl Stearate as Phase Change Material by Melamine Formaldehyde Shell for Thermal Energy Storage
Butyl stearate as a phase change material was microencapsulated within melamine-formaldehyde resin using emulsion polymerization. Morphology and thermal specification of produced microcapsules were studied by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, FT-IR, scanning electron microscopy, SEM, and Differential scanning calorimetry analysis, DSC. FT-IR spectra validated the existence of the butyl s...
